Pre-electoral Petitions : Court Session Begins

In accordance with Section 131 of the Electoral Code which provides the timeframe in which the Constitutional Council has to rule on a petition on the rejection or acceptance of a candidacy, the judicial institution begins hearing today August 4, 2025. A press release signed by the President of the Constitutional Council, Clément Atangana on July 31, 2025 notes that the court session on pre-electoral disputes for the election of President of the Republic shall take place at the courtroom of the institution located at the Yaounde Conference Centre. 
At the close of the deadline for the filing of petitions (July 28), following the publication of candidacies accepted by the Electoral Board of ELECAM on July 26, 2025, as stipulated in Section 129 of the Electoral Code, a total of 35 petitions were recorded at the office of the Registrar-in-Chief of the Constitutional Council. Given the ten days deadline obliged by the Electoral Code to rule on petitions from the date of filing, the Constitutional Council thus has till August 7, 2025 to give a judgement on the 35 petitions registered. “In the case of objections or petitions relating to the rejection or acceptance of candidacies as well as those relating to the colour, initials or emblem chosen by a candidate, the Constitutional Council, before which the matter is brought, shall rule within no more than 10 days of the filling of the petition,” stipulates the Electoral Code. 
During the court session, the Constitutional Council will listen to all parties involved in the petition before giving a ruling which is based on existing legal dispositions. On a global note, the petitioners beseech the Constitutional Council to reject a candidacy validated by the Electoral Board of Elections Cameroon, rehabilitate a candidacy disallowed as well as an appeal letter from independent candidates.
